Cello Q-tet & Ensemble
I was fortunate to grow up playing in a cello choir, under the direction of my teacher, Martha Gerschefski. For professionals, this is a gratifying experience that often differs from the everyday. For students, it is a chamber music outlet that allows them a much more diverse range of parts and learning.
Playing in a cello choir provides an opportunity not only for camaraderie amongst cellists, but also to develop invaluable skills that carry over into the life of a professional musician. In a group of twelve-sixteen players, we often worked without conductor, which meant it was imperative to have a keen awareness of the group as a whole. Learning to listen not only to your own section, but also to the other parts, and understanding how they fit together, helps develop the skills necessary to become a great orchestral and chamber musician.
We learned to support each other, work together, and understand the importance of each part of a composition, whether the melodic line, inner voices, or the bass line. It also gives younger players something to strive for when they hear the more advanced parts.
